Surfing and yoga are a popular combination. Exercising yoga promotes flexibility and body tension and improves your balance, which is essential for surfing. Yoga is a great way to relax after surfing, or as an alternative to surfing if the waves are too big or too small. It's a great way to improve your balance, flexibility and strength. All of these will to improve your time in the water and help you to have fun while surfing!
Depending on the number of participants, we organize a Surf & Yoga week at least once a year, where on top of the surf course, students also practice yoga with our certified yoga teacher. When it's not our Surf & Yoga week, you will still find time for lessons. There are several studios and teachers around. We gladly recommend a good yoga instructor or yoga studio, where yoga can be practised, as a supplement to the surf lessons all year around.
Surfing is a sport that requires good fitness. If you don't want to run out of energy, you need to nourish your body. Luckily, Peniche and Baleal have a number of great restaurants with local and international cuisine. From tasty burgers next to the beach, to the small, charming family establishments with traditional Portuguese cuisine - there are amazing dining options for every taste and budget. Once a week, we also take you out to one of our favourite restaurants to enjoy a meal with the whole group. PORTUGUESE CUISINE Portuguese food is considered to be some of the best in all of Europe. Besides a passion for grilles meats and a solid selection of seafood, you will find a great variety of high quality products. Many Portuguese consider their local food the Atlantic equivalent of the French-Mediterranean cuisine. From the humble potato to the exquisite codfish, Portuguese chefs have mastered the art of cooking with simple ingredients. If you are ever in the area, we suggest trying some delicious dishes like Pastel de Nata, Bacalhau à Bras and Bolo de Mel. There are a number of great family-owned restaurants that we can highly recommend like A Caseirinha, Ferrel, the Sol é Vida with spot view at Consolação or the Restaurante Bateira, Atouguia. BURGERS & SNACKS Make sure to try the burgers and snacks in the local restaurant of Baleal. They are not only tasty, but also a great source of protein for your next surf session. And there are options for vegans as well! If you are a burger lover, you can try all the beach bars right here in Baleal. They all serve decent burgers and finger food at family friendly prices. And all of them offer an excellent view over the bay and Cantinho da Baja, one of the busiest surf spots in the whole Peniche area. Enjoy the sunset with mouthwatering burgers, crispy fries. If you have time, you can just stay and enjoy a couple of cold ones to round off a perfect day with a pleasant evening. INTERNATIONAL FLAVOURS The Portuguese cuisine is famous and delicious, but sometimes everyone needs a little variety. Luckily, there are plenty of other great options to eat out in Peniche, Baleal and Ferrel. If you like, try some authentic Italian pizza and pasta at Tables Ferrel, Brazilian BBQ at O Febras or Sushi and other Asian specialities at Nagoya Peniche. If you are looking for a great diversity of foods in a small area, you're in for a treat.
BERLENGAS ISLAND Berlengas island is a small archipelago located off the coast of Peniche, Portugal. It's a prominent coastal feature and can easily be spotted from the beach. The islands are uninhabited except for a small military post. The combined islands of Berlengas roughly spread over an area of about 5 km² and are comprised of two big islands and some smaller ones. One of them has a lighthouse on the top. ÓBIDOS Óbidos is an ancient town, located in central Portugal, just 25 km north of Peniche. The town has a rich architectural heritage. It was founded in the 10th century, but was later destroyed by a devastating earthquake in 1755. It was identified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998, after being rebuilt with many of its original features preserved. It is home to many ancient monuments and sightseeing spots, some of which include the Igreja de Santa Maria de Óbidos, the Mosteiro of Santa Cruz and the Óbidos Castle. NAZARÉ Nazaré is a truly unique place and world-famous for its ability to produce the biggest surfable waves known to man. It is one of the few places in the world where it is possible to watch surfers ride big waves. Looking at a satellite map, one can easily recognize the deep water channel that allows open ocean swells to travel towards the emblematic cliff like nowhere else. The best big wave surfing conditions are found when there are long consistent offshore winds and a storm surge in the North Atlantic. Nazaré is a perfect place to see this phenomenon because of the arena like atmosphere on top of the big cliff and the main peak. Apart from the big wave spectacle, Nazaré has an extraordinary coastline left and right, with many sandy beaches and strong waves. The distance from Baleal is only about 60 km and takes less than an hour to drive. If there is a big swell in the water, it's always worth the trip!
Considering that Peniche is a lot smaller than Lisbon, it still offers a good range of bars and clubs. The nightlife in Baleal is so famous, that even people from Lisbon come here sometimes, just to enjoy the famous parties at the beach. If you want to chill with your friends for a couple of hours after a long day of surfing, this is just perfect. The vibes are always friendly and relaxed, there are often times live band and plenty of other surfers from all over the world. We can guarantee you will have a great night out and plenty of fun in one of the local surf & beach bars.
