How to Get Footage for Your Online Surf Coaching

To get the most out of your online surf coaching or technique review, you’ll need video footage of your session. Not sure how to get that? Here are a few simple and effective ways to capture your surf sessions—whether you’re at the beach, a surf camp, or a wave pool.

Ask a Friend or Family Member to Record

The easiest and most flexible option is having someone film you from the beach. Some tips:

- Use a phone or camera with decent zoom (especially for point breaks)
- Record in landscape mode
- Keep the camera steady and try to capture your entire ride

Even a few short clips are enough for a useful analysis.

Check Footage from Your Last Surf Camp

Many surf camps offer complimentary video sessions as part of their coaching packages.

If you’ve joined a surf camp recently, there’s a good chance they recorded one or more of your sessions. If you're not sure, reach out to them—most keep footage for a few weeks and are happy to share it.

Use Surfline Sessions™

If you've surfed in front of a Surfline camera, and you were wearing a compatible smartwatch (like an Apple Watch or Garmin), your rides may already be recorded through Surfline Sessions™. What you need:

- Surfline Premium subscription
- Smartwatch with GPS
- A break covered by Surfline cams (e.g. Huntington Beach, Hossegor, Ericeira)

After your session, clips are automatically sent to your Surfline account.

Use Surf Eye in Surf Pools

Surf Eye is an AI-powered video system available at select surf pools and artificial wave facilities. No wearables, no bookings—just surf, and the system will automatically record, track, and edit your waves.

Popular Surf Eye locations:
Europe: Alaïa Bay (Switzerland), Wellenwerk (Berlin), Urbansurf (Zurich), Wakeparadise (Milan)
Americas: Skudin Surf at American Dream (NY), Lakeside Surf (WA), Surf Center Curitiba (Brazil)

You’ll get your session clips within minutes, starting from €4.99.

Look for On-Site Surf Videographers (especially in Indonesia)

Many popular surf destinations—especially in Indonesia—have professional videographers set up at beaches to film surfers. In places like Bali, Lombok, and Sumbawa, it's common to find locals offering:

- In-water GoPro footage
- Land-based long-lens recordings
- Drone shots

You’ll usually find them at the beach or nearby surf shops, and most will send you the clips digitally within a few hours.
